Prògramman Ùra — New Programs

As deaghaidh uair a bha ro-fhada, agus sinne ro-thrang ag obair agus ag ionnsachadh, bidh sgioba Gaelcast a’ tighinn air ais a dh’aithghearr le sreath ùr de phrògramman ann an nòs ùr. “Bhideo” a bhi ann, agus gheibhear filmichean agus podcraolaidhean agus dealbhan agus sgrìobhadh air an làrach-lìn againn.

After a long, work and school-enforced hiatus, the Gaelcast team will soon be back with a new series of programs in a new format. We are going video, and the new programs will feature both video and audio components as well images and text in Gaelic and English on our Web site.

Long Lochlannach fo sheòl.

Anns a’ cheud phrògram, ionnsachaidh sinn beagan mu dheidhinn na Lochlannaich agus na Maineannaich — ann am Maryland. Chaidh sinn a-mach a’ seòladh còmhla ri sgioba “Lochlannach” agus còmhlan Maineannach anns an sgìre againn fhìn.

Chan e a h-uile latha a bhiodh mòd aig Mac an Tòisich, agus chan e a h-uile latha a gheibhear cothrom mar seo idir!

In the first program, we will learn a bit about the Vikings and the Manx — in Maryland. We went out sailing with a “Viking” crew and a Manx group in our own region. As the saying goes, it’s not every day Macintosh has a mòd, and it’s not every day you get a chance like this one!

Anns na prògramman sa teachd, bidh sinn a’ coimhead air cuspairean eile. Thig air ais a dh’aithghearr!

In the programs to come, we’ll be dealing with other programs. Come back soon!

Michael Russell: Ministear Ùr na Gàidhlig

Tha ministear ùr os cionn na Gàidhlig ann an Riaghaltas na h-Alba — Michael Russell. Chaill Linda Fabiani a h-àite mar mhinistear a’ chultair, agus dh’fhalbh i an riaghaltas.

There is a new minister for Gaelic in the Scottish government — Michael Russell. Linda Fabiani lost her post as minister for culture, and left the government.

Chuir Prìomh-Ministear na h-Alba Alex Salmond Russell a-steach mar mhinistear a’ chultair, chùisean taobh a-muigh agus a’ bhun-reachd air an 10mh latha ’sa Ghearran. Bidh Russell a’ dèiligeadh ri Gàidhlig cuideachd. ‘S e Ball Parlamaid na h-Alba a th’ann, agus tha e an sàs anns a’ Phàrtaidh Naiseanta na h-Alba.

Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond appointed Russell minister for culture, external affairs and the constitution on the 10th of February. Russell will deal with Gaelic as well. He is a member of the Scottish Parliament, and the Scottish National Party.

Tha Gàidhlig aig Russell — ‘s e neach-ionnsachaidh a th’ann. B’ esan a thoirt a-steach Bile na Gàidhlig anns a’ Pharlamaid Albannach ann an 2002. Chuir e companaidh meadhanan Gàidhlig, Eala Bhàn Ltd., air bonn cuideachd.

Russell speaks Gaelic — he is a learner. It was he who introduced a Gaelic Act in the Scottish Parliament in 2002. He established a Gaelic media company, Eala Bhàn Ltd., as well.

“Gaelic is, of course, an integral part of contemporary Scotland’s identity and a vital part of the community life and culture where the language is spoken,” thuirt Russell an uiridh, nuair a chuir e fàilte air an darna foillseachadh den “Leabhar Mòr na Gàidhlig”.

“The Scottish Government is committed to promoting the use and raising the profile of Gaelic in Scotland and abroad, and has an ambitious programme for supporting the Gaelic language, education and culture.”

Obama: An e Leòdhasach a th’ann?

Tha fhios aig a h-uile duine gun tàinig athair Bharack Obama à Kenya, agus a mhàthair à Kansas, ach an robh fhios agaibh gur e Leòdhasach a th’ann?

Obama’s Lewis Connection

Mura chreid sibh sin, leughaibh an naidheachd an seo.

Cha tàinig a shinnsearan fhèin às na h-Eileanan ach phòs tè a bha càirdeach riutha fear-Leòdhasach — Moireasdanach a bh’ann — ann am Minnesota fad air ais.

Dh’aithris Hebrides News:

“Way back in the late 1800s one of Barack Obama’s female relatives married the son of a Lewis emigrant thus binding the president-elect with the Western Isles. … Although the Scottish connection is through marriage the new president is likely to have a branch of his family in Lewis..”

Leughaibh tuilleadh an seo.

Mòran taing do “The Croft” airson na naidheachdan!

Tha beachd eile aig na h-Èireannaich, ge-tà. Tha feadhainn dhiubh cinnteach gur e Gaidheal Èireannach a th’ann. Coimheadaibh air seo.

Ceann-Suidhe Nuadh, Toiseachadh Ùr?

Barack Obama Dealbh le Beth Rankin (Flickr)

Thàinig an latha a bha feadhainn a’ fantainn ris o chionn fhada — tha ceann-suidhe ùr againn anns na Stàitean Aonaichte. Tha Barack Obama anns an Taigh Geal, agus chaidh Seòras Bush air ais gu Texas.

Tha John McCain fhathast anns an t-Seanadh, far am bi e gu math cuideachail, à-rèir coltais, gu Ceann-suidhe Obama, ged tha sin doirbh ri creidsinn nuair a smaoinichear air cho mòr a bha e na aghaidh trì mìosan air ais.

Tha mòran daoine air feadh an t-saoghail — mi fhìn nam measg — gu math toilichte gun do bhuannaich Obama agus gu bheil e anns an Taigh Geal a-nise. Cuiridh e an dùthaich air chùrsa cheart ’nam bheachd.

Ach tha mòran ann nach eil toilichte. Thaobh iad ri McCain agus Palin anns an taghadh — 56.9 millean dhiubh (thaobh 64.6 millean ri Obama). Tha iad a’ fuireachd air feadh na dùthcha, gu h-àraid anns an tuath ann an stàitean mar Alabama agus Arkansas, South Carolina agus North Dakota, Oklahoma agus, gun teagamh, Alaska.

Ach tha cothrom ann gun tig Poblachdaich agus Democrataich ri chèile ann an Congress agus air feadh na dùthcha anns an uair dorcha seo – agus tha e dorcha ann an dà-rìreabh. Airson greis, cò-dhiubh.

Mar a thuirt Obama an t-seachdainn sa chaidh,

“Each of us in public life has a responsibility to usher in a new season of cooperation built on those things we hold in common. Not as Democrats. Not as Republicans. But as Americans.”

Dè ur beachd fhèin? Dè bu chòir dha Obama dhèanamh an toiseach? Ris an eaconomaidh? Thall thairis?

Cà robh sibh air an 20mh? Aig àm an Inauguration?

Ma bhios sibh a’ fuireachd ann an Alba neo àite eile taobh a-muigh na Stàitean Aonaichte, dè bha sibh a’ smaoineachadh?

Bhithinn toilichte ur beachdan a chluinntinn.

Uill, a chàirdean, tha an latha mòr air tighinn agus air falbh, agus nach mìorbhaileach sin – tha Barack Obama gu bhith ann mar cheann suidhe. Tha gàirdeachas mòr, faochadh, agus toileachas ann – air aon taobh, ‘s cinnteach – agus air an taobh eile? Tha cuid a’ dol a dh’fheitheamh gus an ath-thaghadh, tha cuid a’ gearain, agus cuid eile sàmhach. Ach sàmhchair ann no às, tha eachdraidh air a deanamh a-nist.

Well, friends, the day came and went and isn’t it miraculous – Barack Obama is to be the next president. There is celebration, relief, and happiness – on one side anyway, and on the other side? Some are going to wait for the next election, some are complaining, and some are silent. But, silence or no, history has been made.

Tha Liam agus Micheal a’ bruidhinn an turas seo mu’n taghadh, an coimeas a th’ann eadar an turas seo agus taghaidhean eile a bha ann, agus de tha an taghadh seo a’ ciallachadh do na Stàitean, do’n sgaradh a th’againn eadar na cinealan, agus eadar na pàrtaidhean poileatagach. Cuideachd, tha sinn a’ dol thairis air an obair mhòir a tha a-nist aig Ceann-Suidhe Taghte Obama agus dè a dh’fhaodadh e – agus gu dè a dh’fheumadh e – deanamh airson a bhith soirbheachail anns na ceithir bliadhnaichean a tha romhainn.

Liam and Micheal talk this time about the election, comparing it to other elections, and what this election means to the States, to the division we have between the races, and between the political parties. We also go over the huge task that President-elect Obama has now, and what he may – and must – do to be successful in the next four years.

A bheil sibh ag aontachadh leinn? A bheil beachdan eile agaibh? A bheil sibh toilichte leis mar a thàinig a h-uile sian a-mach? Sgrìobhaibh thugainn agus innsibh dhuinn na th’air ur n-inntinn!

Do you agree with us? Do you have other opinions? Are you happy with how everything came out? Write to us and tell us your thoughts!

Fàilte air ais, a chàirdean. Chan eil ach seachdainn air fhàgail anns na Stàitean gus an tig an cò-dhùnadh againn as cudthromach, ’s dòcha, ann an iomadh bliadhna: an taghadh 2008.

Welcome back, friends. There is only a week left in the United States before our most important decision, perhaps, in many years: the 2008 election.

Cò bhuannaicheas, John McCain neo Barack Obama? Cò aig a tha fios? ’S beag a tha dh’fhios againn!

Who will win, John McCain or Barack Obama? Who knows? It’s little we know!

Ach bhruidhinn sinn mu na taghaidhean ri Micheal Bochanan, neach-naidheachd aig a’ BhBC ann an Lunnain. Chaidh Bochanan ùine seachad ann an Washington, agus tha e gu math eòlach air dòighean phoiliteagach nan Stàitean.

But we spoke about the elections with Michael Buchanan, a reporter with the BBC in London. Buchanan spent time in Washington, and he knows American politics well.

Dh’fhaighneachd sinn dheth ciamar a tha na h-Albannaich agus na Breatannaich gu lèir a’ coimhead air na taghaidhean agus dè tha iad a’ smaoineachadh mu na tagraichean.

We asked him how the Scots and the British as a whole look on the elections and what they think about the candidates.

Tha sinn an dùil ’san dòchas gum biodh na thuirt e glè-ùidheil dhuibh!

We expect and hope that what he said will be very interesting to you!

Do ar càirdean ann an Canada, meal-ur-naidheachd: tha an taghadh agaibhse seachad. Agus ma ’s e anns na Stàitean a tha sibh: bhòtaibh!

To our friends in Canada, congratlulations: your election is over. And if you’re in the States: vote!

Prògram 33

Fàilte, a chàirdean, gu Gaelcast. Welcome, friends, to Gaelcast.

Tha sinn air ais as dèidh ùine ro-fhada gu lèir le sreath de phrògramman ùra. Tòisichidh sinn le còmhradh eadar Micheal agus Liam mu dheidhinn — dè eile — phoileataigs. Bruidhnidh sinn greiseag mu na taghaidhean agus na tagraichean anns na Stàitean Aonaichte. Ciamar a tha cùisean a’ dol airson nan tagraichean? Dè ur beachd fhèin?

We’re back after too long a time altogether with a series of new programs. We’ll begin with a conversation between Michael and Liam about — what else — politics. We’ll speak a bit about the elections and the candidates in the United States. Are how things going for the candidates? What’s your own opinion?

As dèidh sin, thèid sinn gu taigh a’ cheud chinn-suidhe, George Washington, còmhla ri Liam agus Pòl MacCalluim à Uibhist a Deas. Bha Pòl ann an Washington airson Mòd Naiseanta Aimearagaidh, far an robh e na bhritheamh, agus chuir e latha seachad còmhla ri Liam ann an Alexandria agus Mount Vernon, Virginia. Dè na smuaintean a bh’aige?

After that, we’ll go to the home of our first president, George Washington, along with Liam and Paul McCallum of South Uist. Paul was in Washington for the U.S. National Mòd, where he was the adjudicator, and he spent a day with Liam in Alexandria and Mount Vernon, Virginia. What were his thoughts?

Èistibh agus ionnsachaidh sibh. Cluinnidh sinn òran bhuaithe, cuideachd.

Listen and learn. We’ll hear a song from him, as well.

A bharrachd air sin, thig sinn air ais le prògram eile a’ tighinn a-mach a dh’aithghearr. Anns an ath-phrògram, bruidhnidh sinn ri Micheal Bochanan, neachd-naidheachd aig a’ BhBC ann an Lunnain, mu na taghaidhean.

In addition, we’ll be back with a new program shortly. In the next program, we’ll speak with Michael Buchanan, a reporter with the BBC in London, about the elections.

Gaelcast TV: Gillebride aig Latha na Gàidhlig

Chaidh sinn gu Latha na Gàidhlig ann an Alexandria, Va., faisg air Washington agus thachair sinn ri Gillebride Mac ‘Ille Mhaoil, an t-seinneadar à Gearraidh Bhailteas ann an Uibhist a Deas. Thàinig Gillebride a-null air turas mu thimcheall na Stàitean – bha e ann an Ohio far an deach e gu Mòd nan Lochan Mòra, mu thimcheall Washington agus ann an Carolina a Tuath, far an do theagasg e Gàidhlig agus òrain Gàidhlig aig seachdain tumaidh leis a’ Chomann Gàidhealach Ameireaganach.

We went to a Gaelic Day in Alexandria, Va., close to Washington and met with Gillebride MacMillan, the singer from Gearraidh Bhailteas in South Uist. Gillebride came over on a tour about the States – he was in Ohio where he went to the Great Lakes Mòd, around Washington and in North Carolina, where he taught Gaelic and Gaelic song at an immersion week with the American Gaelic Society.

Bha sinn cho toilichte gun robh e ann agus gun d’fhuair sinn cothrom a bhith bruidhinn ris greiseag, mar a chi sibh anns an bhidio ghoirid seo. Thuirt Gillebride beagan mu dheidhinn a thuras dhuinn agus ghabh e òran fìor-bhòidheach: “A Chailin Mheall Thu Mi.” Gabhaibh tlachd às! Tha sinn an dòchas gun cuir sinn tuilleadh a-mach a dh’aithghearr.

We were delighted he was there and we got the chance to speak with him a bit, as you will see in this short video. Gillebride told us a little bit about his journey and sang a very beautiful song: “A Chailin Mheall Thu Mi” (“Girl, You Have Deceived Me.”). Enjoy it! We hope to put out more before too long.

Dh’fhoillsich Gillebride a’ chiad chlàr, “Thogainn Ort Fonn,” anns an Dùbhlachd 2006. Tha tuilleadh fiosrachaidh ma dheidhinn ri fhaotainn aig http://www.myspace.com/gillebridemacmillan.

Gillebride produced his first record, “Thogainn Ort Fonn,” in December 2006. More information about him is available at the Web site above.
