Seo dhuibh, a chàirdean, ar naoidheamh prògram – prògram na Nollaig. Tha sinn a’ toirt dhuibh beagan fiosrachaidh mu thachartas dhan deach sinn aig toiseach na mios – coiseachd na Nolliag, a ghabh àite ann am baile Alexandria, a tha gu math faisg oirnn. ‘S e a tha sonraichte mu dheidhinn na coiseachd a tha seo, an ceangail th’aig baile Alexandria ri Alba, a tha air a riochdachadh anns a’ choiseachd fhèin – chi sibh, ma thèid sibh ann, a h-uile seòrsa rud Albannach – pìobairean, coin, fèilidhean, agus – seadh – am buidheann dham buinn duinn – an Comunn Gaidhealach anns na Stàitean – dìreach gus a bhith ‘g innse dhan t-sluagh gu bheil a’ Gàidhlig beò anns an àite far a bheil iad a’ fuireach. Bidh sinn a’ bruidhinn mu eachdraidh a’ bhaile, agus eachdraidh na coiseachd. Ma bhios sibh faisg air Alexandria an ath-bhliadhna aig toiseach na Dùbhlachd, nach tèid sibh ann!

Here, friends, you have our ninth program – a Christmas program. We show you a little about an event that we went to at the beginning of the month – the Christmas Walk, which took place in Alexandria, a city that is quite close to us. This walk is special because of the connection that Alexandria has with Scotland, a connection that is represented in the walk itself – if you go, you will see all kinds of Scottish things – pipers, dogs, kilts, and, yes, our own organization – ACGA – if only to show the people of the city that Gaelic is alive where they live. We talk about the history of Alexandria, as well as the history of the walk itself – if you’re near Alexandria next year at the beginning of December, why not go to the walk?

An uair sin, tha sinn a’ bruidhinn air cleachdaidhean agus nòsan na Nollaig, mar a bh’againne nuair a bha sinn òg, agus mar a bha sinn a’ coimhead air àm na Nollaig mar chloinn. ‘S dòcha, dhan fheadhainn a chaidh àrach ann an Albainn, no ann an àiteachan eadar-dhealaichte anns na Staitean, gum bi na cleachdaidhean seo caran annasach. Nach sgrìobh sibh thugainn a dh’innse mar a bha e dhuibh aig àm na Nollaig, no air latha na Nollaig fheìn nuair a bha sibh òg.

Then, we talk about the customs and practices we had for Christmas, when we were young, and how we saw Christmas as children. It may be that to those who were raised in Scotland, or in different places in the States, that these customs are a little odd. Why not write to us and say how it was for you at Christmastime, or on Christmas day when you were young?

Agus mu deireadh, tha sinn a’ toirt sùil air cleachdadh a tha fhathast a’ dol ann an àiteachan ann an Èirinn, agus àiteachan ceilteach eile – a b’àbhaist a bhith fada nas cumanta na tha e – sealgaireachd an Dreathain – Dreathan Donn mar a chanadh sinne. ‘S e cleachdadh gu math inntinneach agus gu math eadar-dhealaichte bho na tha sinne air fhaicinn, ach tha rudan ann a tha a’ toirt Oidhche Shamhna agus a’ Challainn ‘nar cuimhne cuideachd. Èistibh ri sin, agus ‘s dòcha gum faicear sibhse, a’ dol a-mach le aodaich connlach oirbh, agus cèidse le dreathan donn innte (a tha fhathast beò!) a’ dol mu’n cuairt dhan taighean seinnse ‘san nàbachd agaibhse, aig àm na h-ath-Nollaig!

Finally, we look at a practice that is still being done in places in Ireland and other celtic places, that used to be much more common than it is now – the Hunting of the Wren. It’s a very interesting practice, and very different from what we have seen, but which is somewhat reminiscent of Halloween and Hogmany as well. Listen, and you may be seen going out with staw clothes, and with a cage with a wren in it (who is still alive!), and going to the bars in your neighborhood, at Christmastime next year!
